Pineapple + Apple + Black Grapes Sasam a sweet dish.

"Pineapple + Apple + Black Grapes Sasam" ... A famous Konkani Saraswat Delicacy prepared when fruits are in season adding in medium spiced masala and served as a side dish along with Dal-Chawal etc. ... Yummilicious .......

Sasam is a dish prepared both sweet and spicy with different combos. Its prepared with the addition of curds too which is of medium spice. But this particular one is prepared generally with fruits, by adding in ground masala and seasoning. The masala is not cooked and it has to be served maximum within an hour of preparation as it turns sour and inedible later on. By an large avnasa ambe sasam is the most famous in Amchi (Konkani) ie the one prepared with ripe mangoes and pineapple and is a famous seasonal delicacy. During the month of april to june when marriage functions are held by and large this is the most common dish prepared and served at every function. Today however, I prepared the same as there were lots of apples at home and was wondering how to finish them off. This is a dish loved by young and old alike, do try it, you can enjoy it with chapati too.

Boil or Micro wave 1 cup of pineapple pieces with half a cup of jaggery till slightly cooked. They should be firm and not mushy. Cool and add it with 1 medium sized apple cut into pieces. Add in about 15 large sized black grapes cut into two. Mix all the three fruits well with a pinch of salt.

** Masala to be ground : Grind ½ cup of fresh coconut with 1 green chilly and 1 red chilly to a fine paste. When the paste has been ground finely add ½ tsp of rai (sasam) and grind for a minute of two. They should just be crushed well. Remove and add the masala to the prepared fruit and mix in well. Add water if necessary only. Serve immediately or keep it in the fridge to cool and then serve.

Note: The dish should be kept immediately in the fridge as the masala added to the fruits is not heated which may result in spoiling of the dish.

Seasoning of the dish if Optional and a matter of choice, I have not tempered it as I prefer it as it is, though sometime I do add it, however you can if you wish to. Just heat a tsp of oil in a small kadai, add half a spoon of sasam (rai), when they splutter add in a few curry leaves and pour this over the Pineapple + Apple + Grape Sasam.

This Sasam is Usually prepared with Pineapple, Ripe Mango and Grapes very famously known in Saraswat community as Avnas Ambe Sasam. However as it is not the season of Mangoes I have replaced it with apple here. Serve this freshly prepared as a side dish with other dishes and enjoy with your family and friends. Tastes simply awesome.
